Summary
In 2019 - 113,815 marriages were registered in Australia.
In 20202 - 78,989 marriages were registered in Australia
Overall decrease of 30.6% from 2019 to 2020
This is the largest annual decrease in marriages ever reported by ABS since reporting started in 1901
Undeniably, the impact of COVID has been HUGE!
Look at what happened (in some of the months following) after lockdown measures were implemented in March 2020:
In April, only 3,245 marriages were registered compared to the average of 11,274 over the last 5 years
In May, 3,589 marriages took place compared to an average of 8,405 between 2015-2019
June had the lowest number of weddings of every month in 2020 (which is normal) BUT, it had less than 50% of marriages "normally" registered.
In September, 5734 marriages were registered compared to average of 10,920 over last 5 years
Most common days to marry
INTERESTINGLY, what did stay similar was that Saturday 10th October was the most common day on which to marry with 2,191 couples saying I DO on this date. Historically, 10th October has been a popular day to marry given it falls on a Saturday. And, 1,517 couples chose to marry on Saturday 29th February 2020 as it was a leap year!
